지난 시간에는 자음과 모음이 만나 한글 음절을 만드는 방법을 배웠습니다.
In Lesson 4, we learned how consonants and vowels combine to form Korean syllables.

이번에는 음절의 아래쪽에 오는 자음, 받침(batchim)을 배워보겠습니다.
This time, we will learn batchim, the final consonant placed at the bottom of a Korean syllable.

🧩 받침은 어디에 있을까요? | Where Is Batchim?

기본 한글 음절은 자음과 모음으로 만들었습니다.

A basic Korean syllable is made from a consonant and a vowel.

ㅂ + ㅏ = 바

여기에 자음이 하나 더 아래에 오면 받침이 됩니다.

When another consonant is added at the bottom, it becomes the batchim.

ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅁ = 밤

🟢 초성 · 중성 · 종성 | Initial · Vowel · Final

한글 음절의 자리를 이렇게 부릅니다.

The positions inside a Korean syllable have specific names.

초성 初聲 — 처음 오는 자음 | initial consonant

중성 中聲 — 가운데 모음 | vowel

종성 終聲 — 마지막에 오는 자음, 즉 받침 | final consonant / batchim

ㅂ ㅏ ㅁ = 밤

이번에는 ㅂ과 ㅏ는 그대로 두고, 받침만 바꾸어 보겠습니다.

Keep ㅂ and ㅏ the same, and change only the batchim.

ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅁ = 밤
ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅂ = 밥
ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅇ = 방
ㅂ + ㅏ + ㄱ = 박

💡 받침 하나로 뜻이 달라져요 | One Batchim Changes the Word

받침 한 글자만 달라져도 단어의 소리와 뜻이 모두 달라질 수 있습니다.

Changing just one final consonant can change both the sound and the meaning of a word.

밤 — night / chestnut

밥 — cooked rice / meal

방 — room

박 — a Korean family name; also appears in various words

지금은 받침의 모든 발음 규칙을 외울 필요는 없습니다. 먼저 받침이 음절 아래에 온다는 것을 익히세요.
You do not need to memorize all batchim pronunciation rules yet. First, remember that batchim appears at the bottom of a syllable.
