지난 시간에는 음절 아래에 오는 자음, 받침을 배웠습니다.
In Lesson 5, we learned batchim, the final consonant at the bottom of a syllable.

 

이번에는 같은 자음을 두 번 겹쳐 쓰는 쌍자음을 배워보겠습니다.
This time, we will learn double consonants, made by doubling certain Korean consonants.

🧩 같은 자음을 두 번 써요 | Double the Consonant

일부 기본 자음은 같은 글자를 두 번 겹쳐 쓰면 쌍자음이 됩니다.

Some basic consonants become double consonants when the same letter is written twice.

ㄱ + ㄱ = ㄲ
ㄷ + ㄷ = ㄸ
ㅂ + ㅂ = ㅃ
ㅅ + ㅅ = ㅆ
ㅈ + ㅈ = ㅉ

🔊 쌍자음은 더 단단하게 | Tense Sounds

쌍자음은 한국어에서 된소리라고 부르는 단단하고 긴장된 소리를 냅니다.

Double consonants are pronounced with a tighter, more tense sound.

공기를 세게 내보내는 소리라기보다 입과 목에 힘을 주어 짧고 단단하게 소리 내는 것이 특징입니다.

Rather than using a strong burst of air, the sound is produced with more tension in the mouth and throat.

💡 발음 팁 | Pronunciation Tip
영어에는 쌍자음과 정확히 같은 소리가 없습니다. 영어 철자는 참고만 하고, 실제 한국어 소리를 듣고 따라 하는 연습이 중요합니다.
English does not have exact equivalents for Korean double consonants. Use romanization only as a guide and practice by listening and repeating.
