한국어 공부를 시작하기 전에 먼저 한국어를 쓰는 문자, 한글(Hangeul)에 대해 알아보겠습니다.
Before we begin studying Korean, let’s first learn about Hangeul, the Korean alphabet.

Hangeul history itself is not a main focus of TOPIK, but reading Hangeul accurately is an essential foundation for Korean listening, reading, and writing.

👑 한글은 누가 만들었을까요? | Who Created Hangeul?

한글은 세종대왕(King Sejong the Great) 때 만들어졌습니다.

Hangeul was created during the reign of King Sejong the Great.

세종대왕은 조선의 네 번째 왕이었습니다.

King Sejong the Great was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty.

당시 조선에서는 글을 쓸 때 주로 한자를 사용했습니다.

At that time, Chinese characters were mainly used for writing in Joseon.

하지만 한자는 많은 일반 백성이 쉽게 배우고 사용하기 어려웠습니다.

However, Chinese characters were difficult for many ordinary people to learn and use.

세종대왕은 사람들이 자신의 말을 보다 쉽게 글로 표현할 수 있는 새로운 문자를 만들고자 했습니다.
King Sejong the Great wanted a writing system that would allow people to express their language more easily in writing.

📜 훈민정음 | Hunminjeongeum

한글이 처음 만들어졌을 때의 이름은 훈민정음(訓民正音)이었습니다.

The original name of Hangeul was Hunminjeongeum.

훈민정음은 1443년에 창제되었고, 1446년에 공식적으로 반포되었습니다.

Hunminjeongeum was created in 1443 and officially promulgated in 1446.

오늘날 우리는 이 문자를 한글이라고 부릅니다.
Today, we call this writing system Hangeul.

🔤 한글의 기본 | Hangeul Basics

한글은 기본적으로 자음(consonants)과 모음(vowels)으로 이루어져 있습니다.

Hangeul is made up of consonants and vowels.

ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ

모음 | Vowels

처음에는 이 글자들을 하나씩 배우게 됩니다.
You will first learn these letters one by one.

실제 한국어에서는 자음과 모음을 하나의 음절 블록 안에 모아서 씁니다.
In written Korean, consonants and vowels are grouped together to form syllable blocks.

🧩 한글은 블록처럼 만들어요 | Hangeul Works Like Building Blocks

예를 들어 볼까요?
Let’s look at an example.

ㄱ + ㅏ = 가

ㄱ은 자음입니다. | ㄱ is a consonant.
ㅏ는 모음입니다. | ㅏ is a vowel.

두 글자를 합치면 가가 됩니다.
When the two letters are combined, they form 가.

ㄴ + ㅏ = 나
ㄷ + ㅏ = 다
ㅁ + ㅏ = 마

영어에서는 알파벳을 보통 한 줄로 이어 쓰지만, 한글은 여러 글자를 하나의 음절 블록으로 모아 씁니다.
Unlike English, where letters are usually written in a line, Hangeul groups letters into syllable blocks.

ㅏ는 모음입니다.

🔊 발음 | Pronunciation

한글 글자를 영어 알파벳과 완전히 같은 소리라고 생각하지 않는 것이 중요합니다.

It is important not to assume that Korean letters sound exactly the same as English letters.

예를 들어 ㄱ은 위치와 주변 소리에 따라 영어의 g나 k와 비슷하게 들릴 수 있지만, 정확히 같은 소리는 아닙니다.

For example, ㄱ may sound somewhat similar to English g or k, depending on its position, but it is not exactly the same sound.

한국에서는 다음 두 표현을 모두 자주 사용합니다.
In Korea, you will often hear both of these expressions.

to learn Korean

한글을 배우다는 한국어 글자를 읽고 쓰는 방법을 배우는 것이고, 한국어를 배우다는 어휘, 문법, 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기 등 언어 전체를 배우는 것을 뜻합니다.

한국에서는 매년 10월 9일을 한글날(Hangeul Day)로 기념합니다.

In South Korea, October 9 is celebrated as Hangeul Day.

한글의 창제와 가치를 기념하는 날이며, 한국의 공휴일입니다.
