지금의 산동성 복현에서 진(晉)의 문공이 초(楚)나라와 싸우게 되었는데, 상대의 전력이 너무도 강해 어떻게 해야 할지 방책을 물었다.
When Duke Wen of Jin was fighting the state of Chu in what is now Boxing County, Shandong, he found the enemy too strong and asked for a strategy.
한 대신이 이렇게 대답했다.
One of his ministers replied:
“예를 중시하는 사람은 변화를 두려워하고, 싸움을 잘하는 사람은 승리를 속임수에 숨긴다고 들었습니다.
I have heard that those who value propriety fear change, and those skilled in battle hide victory within deception.
연못의 물을 다 퍼내어 고기를 잡는다면 오늘은 고기를 잡을 수 있지만, 내일은 잡을 고기가 없을 것입니다.
If you drain a pond to catch fish, you may get fish today, but there will be none tomorrow.
산의 나무를 다 불태우면 오늘은 짐승을 잡을 수 있겠지만, 내일은 잡을 짐승이 없을 것입니다.”
If you burn down all the trees in the forest to hunt game, you might catch animals today, but there will be none left to catch tomorrow.
즉, 눈앞의 이익만을 추구하다가 먼 장래를 고려하지 못한 계획을 ‘갈택이어’라 한다.
Thus, pursuing immediate benefits without regard for the future is called “Gal-taek-i-eo.”
