October 9 is Hangeul Day, a national holiday in Korea celebrating Hangeul, the Korean writing system.
But why is Hangeul Day celebrated on October 9?
In 2026, you may hear two different numbers associated with Hangeul: the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day and the 580th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum.
What do these two anniversaries mean? Let's follow the story of Hangeul Day from its beginnings to the October 9 holiday Koreans celebrate today.
Hangeul Day Wasn't Always October 9
The history of Hangeul Day as a commemorative event goes back to 1926.
A Korean language research organization held an event to commemorate the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum. At that time, however, the day was not yet called Hangeul Day.
Gagyanal
The first celebration was called Gagyanal (가갸날), a name inspired by the way people practiced Korean syllables such as 가, 갸, 거, 겨.
If you have studied Korean, you may recognize the rhythm: 가, 갸, 거, 겨…. The name reflected the traditional way people practiced Korean letters and syllables.
In 1926, the celebration was held on the 29th day of the ninth lunar month. A few years later, in 1928, the name Hangeul Day (한글날) came into use.
So Why October 9?
For many years, there was not enough historical evidence to determine the exact date on which Hunminjeongeum had been proclaimed. As a result, the date of Hangeul Day changed over time.
Then, in 1940, a copy of the Hunminjeongeum Haerye was discovered. This important document provided new historical evidence about the proclamation of the writing system.
The document indicates that Hunminjeongeum was proclaimed during the first ten days of the ninth lunar month in 1446.
The tenth day of the ninth lunar month was therefore taken as the commemorative date. Converted to the solar calendar for that year, it corresponded to October 9.
October 9 commemorates the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum.
Why Is 2026 the 100th Anniversary?
There are actually two different anniversaries to remember.
1446 → 2026
580 years since the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum
1926 → 2026
100 years since the first Hangeul Day celebration
This does not mean that Hangeul is only 100 years old.
The year 2026 marks 100 years since the first official commemorative event in 1926. If we count from the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum in 1446, however, 2026 marks its 580th anniversary.
